Glossary
D
- Direct Commands
- Commands given to a subject in a direct manner, such as "stand up", or "you will quit smoking". Typically the deeper the trance the more direct you can give the suggestions.
- Deep Structure
- The unconscious basis for the surface structure of a statement. Much of the deep structure is out of awareness. It is the complete representation of the logical semantic relations in a
sentence.
- Deletion
- One of the three major processes (including distortion and generalization) on which the Meta Model is based. Deletion occurs when we leave out a portion of our experience.
- Digital
- Varying between a distinct number of states, as opposed to Analogue which is a continuum. For example, in visual Submodalities a memory is a movie or a slide or a light
switch is either on or off. Auditory digital refers to thinking,
processing, and communicating using words, rather than in the
five senses.
- Dissociated
- It deals with your relationship to an experience. In a memory, for example, you are dissociated when you are not looking through your own eyes, and you see your body in the picture. We can have double dissociation in the NLP fast phobia cure where you watch yourself watching the traumatic event. Each level of dissociation lessens the feelings.
- Distortion
- One of the three major processes (including deletion and generalization) on which the Meta Model is based. It is one of the processes by which we represent the external reality in terms
of our neurology. The modeling process by which we inaccurately
represent something in our neurology or linguistics, can
occur to create limitations or resources. Distortion occurs when something is mistaken for something else. Distortion is the result of using a map (language) to describe, generalize, and theorize about our
experience. Ultimately distortions, deletions and generalizations may be simplified to "the map is not the territory." The way we distort, delete and generalize may be used (through the meta-model questioning) to alter behavior for the "better."
- Downtime
- Not in immediate external sensory awareness, but "down" inside one's own mind,
seeing, hearing, and feeling thoughts, memories, awarenesses;
a light trance state with attention focused inward. Downtime occurs whenever we go inside. It can occur when we go internal for a piece of information or when we get in touch with feelings.
- Drivers
- In Submodalities, drivers are the difference that makes the difference. Discovered through the process of Contrastive Analysis, Drivers are the critical Submodalities, and when changed tend to carry the other Submodalities with them.
-
- Deletion
- The missing portion of an experience either linguistically or
representationally. With distortion and generalization form the three major processes on which the Meta Model is based.
